Medication Misuse Epidemic

The epidemic of medication misuse and addiction is fueled by three main drivers: overprescribing, overuse, and improper disposal of excess pills. Clinical studies highlight alarming statistics, such as a Johns Hopkins University study indicating that up to 92% of patients have unused pills after surgery. Yet, data on prescribing patterns is scarce, as noted by the American Journal of Law and Medicine. The risk of misuse intensifies with prolonged exposure; a University of Michigan study found that one in 16 people prescribed opioids after surgery becomes a chronic user after just one dose.

The Addinex system addresses these drivers to help clinicians and patients combat this epidemic. For overprescribing, it empowers providers to adjust dosages and track usage. To prevent overuse, Addinex monitors prescriptions, aiming to reduce prolonged usage risks. Finally, it tackles improper disposal by encouraging patients to safely discard unused medication, helping to curb the 3 billion pills retained or diverted annually.

So, how is Addinex solving this?

Patented Opioid Dispensing System

Addinex has developed a patented, low-cost opioid dispensing system to prevent prescription drug misuse. The system incorporates controlled dispensing through a password-protected device that provides access to pills based on the prescription schedule. A lock-out feature ensures patients cannot exceed prescribed dosages. Combined with an easy-to-use app, Addinex offers real-time patient education, pain monitoring, and personalized feedback to encourage responsible use. Excess medication is returned using a prepaid mailer for safe disposal, reducing environmental impact and illicit use risks.

The system also gathers HIPAA-compliant data on patient usage and pain levels, helping doctors optimize prescriptions and prevent overprescribing. With its innovative approach, Addinex mirrors the proven efficacy of seatbelts and helmets by adding essential safety for opioid users. By prioritizing education, proper disposal, and data-driven insights, Addinex reduces the potential harm of opioids while empowering patients to transition to safer pain management alternatives.

Brand Identity and Design System
The existing brand identity and design elements at Addinex lacked cohesion and did not effectively convey the company’s innovative, patient-centric approach. The design needed to better reflect the brand’s mission and values, while offering a more unified and impactful presence across all digital touchpoints.

To achieve this, we developed a robust design system that ensures consistency across the website, mobile and web applications, and marketing materials. This system was crafted to align with their goals and create a seamless visual identity that communicates their commitment to innovation and patient safety.
Website Architecture
The website required a complete overhaul to better reflect the company's mission of preventing prescription drug misuse and position it effectively within the healthcare technology space. The redesign aimed to enhance the aesthetic and functional experience, ensuring clear communication of the brand’s values.

Key information needed to be easily accessible, user-friendly, and presented in a way that resonates with both healthcare providers and patients. The goal was to reinforce Addinex’s commitment to safety, innovation, and a patient-centric approach throughout the user journey.

Through thoughtful design interventions, we aimed to build a cohesive, value-driven experience that fosters a culture of safety, responsibility, and innovation. The goal was to ensure that these principles are consistently reflected across all of the brand’s digital touchpoints. To begin the design process, we researched leading healthcare and technology organizations worldwide for industry best practices and drew visual inspiration from clean, modern, and approachable design styles to create an intuitive and engaging user experience.

UX Audit

To better understand the challenges faced by Addinex, we conducted a thorough UX audit. This included a heuristic evaluation of the website and an analysis of user behavior through web analytics. We also conducted user interviews with doctors, patients, and other stakeholders to gather insights specific to the web app portal. This combined approach allowed us to identify key usability issues, understand user needs, and prioritize improvements for both the website and the web app portal, ensuring a more intuitive and user-friendly experience for all involved.

Heuristic Evaluation and Data Analysis

To identify and address key usability issues on the Addinex Technologies website, we began with a heuristic evaluation. This helped us pinpoint major design and navigation issues based on established usability principles. Following this, we used Google Analytics and plausible.io to gather more detailed data on user behavior, including critical metrics such as pageviews, session durations, and bounce rates. This quantitative data provided a deeper understanding of how users interact with the site, revealing areas with high engagement and others that needed optimization. By combining insights from the heuristic evaluation with analytics data, we were able to prioritize improvements based on both usability concerns and actual user behavior. This two-pronged approach allowed us to make data-driven decisions, enhancing the overall user experience on the website and aligning it with user expectations.

User Interviews

To design a user-friendly web app for Addinex, we conducted detailed user interviews with doctors, patients, and key stakeholders. These sessions explored their needs, challenges, and expectations, focusing on features to support safe medication use. Doctors emphasized the importance of real-time tracking, dosage adjustment tools, and HIPAA-compliant data insights, while patients highlighted ease of use, educational resources, and reminders for medication and disposal. Stakeholders stressed seamless integration with existing healthcare systems and accessibility for diverse demographics. Insights from these interviews were synthesized into actionable requirements, ensuring the app addressed critical pain points and promoted a safe, intuitive experience for all users.

To understand pressing pain points, we conducted thorough user interviews with both doctors and patients, illuminating crucial areas for improvement.

We mapped takeaways from each user group and identified common points, representing them in a Venn diagram for comprehensive analysis.
